Reach for micro-tip pruning shears when you have a lot of cuts to make and the spring matters — a long trimming session, clearing a dense canopy, anything where your hand will tire before the job ends.
Reach for these when the cut itself is the hard part. No spring means the blades stay where you put them, so you can rest the tip against a stem, look, adjust, and only then close. That control is worth more than speed when a wrong cut takes a season to grow back.
Most people who do both kinds of work own both. They are not really substitutes.

Looking after them
Scissors live or die on the pivot. A loose pivot makes the blades pass instead of shear, and once they pass, they will chew a stem rather than cut it.
- Wipe both blade faces after use, not just the cutting edge. Residue works its way to the pivot and stiffens the action.
- Wipe with isopropyl alcohol between plants. Detail work means many small cuts on the same plant, which is exactly the pattern that spreads a problem if the blade is carrying one.
- Store them dry and closed. Stainless resists rust rather than ignoring it.
- Do not force them through thick stems. Springing the blades apart is what ruins the shear, and it is not reversible at home.
Questions people ask
Are these real bonsai scissors or the general-purpose kind?
They are the looped-handle detail pattern used for bonsai work, in stainless rather than the traditional carbon steel. Carbon takes a finer edge and rusts if you look at it wrong; stainless holds a slightly less keen edge and forgives being put away damp.
Why two sizes in the pack?
The 60 mm pair handles thicker shoots and gets through more material per cut; the 40 mm pair fits where the larger will not. On a small plant you will mostly reach for the 40 mm.
Can I use them on woody branches?
No. Use a concave cutter or a bypass pruner for anything woody. These will spring before they cut it.
Are they left-handed friendly?
Yes — the loops and blades are symmetrical.
Can they be sharpened?
Yes, with a fine ceramic or diamond hone, following the existing bevel. Keep the two blade faces flat; rounding them is what stops a scissor shearing.
